Did You or a Family Member Develop Cancer After Using Roundup?

Recently, a California jury ordered Monsanto, the maker of Roundup Weed Killer, to pay over $2 billion to a married couple who were both diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The jury found that Roundup was a direct cause of their illness, and that Monsanto tried to cover up scientific evidence pointing to the dangers of their product.

What Is Roundup?

Roundup is the brand name for a line of herbicides (weed-killers) produced by the Monsanto Company, an agrichemical and agricultural giant. In 2018, Monsanto was acquired by Bayer AG, a German pharmaceutical corporation best known for producing aspirin.

For years, it has been contended that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, causes cancer. It has been named a “probable carcinogen” by the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). However, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently backtracked on its stance that glyphosate was probably a human carcinogen and now states that it is safe as long as it is used according to the label. In short, there is no scientific consensus on how toxic glyphosate actually is.

However, thousands of lawsuits have been filed by people who believe Roundup has caused them several types of cancer, like non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, b-cell lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic lymphoma, leukemia, and more. They say that Monsanto refused to put warning labels on the product to even warn of the risk of cancer, against the evidence that there was a possible link. And that is a cause of action to file a product liability claim.

Notable Lawsuits Against Roundup

In May 2019, Alva and Alberta Pilliod were awarded $2.055 billion by an Alameda County jury for their double diagnoses of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which they put down to 30 years of consistently using Roundup on three properties that they owned. The jury agreed and ordered Monsanto to pay $1 billion to each spouse in punitive damages, and a combined $55 million in compensatory damages. A judge later reduced the verdict to $87 million, citing the U.S. Supreme Court’s constitutional limits on punitive damages.

In August 2018, a former school groundskeeper named Dewayne Johnson won a San Francisco jury’s verdict of $289 million against Monsanto—$39 million in compensatory damages and $250 million in punitive damages. Mr. Johnson had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and had filed the lawsuit back in 2016. Because his illness was terminal, the trial was fast-tracked, though it still took years. A judge later reduced the verdict to $78.5 million.

Though both verdicts were reduced on appeal, the message is clear: victims who have been harmed by Monsanto are entitled to substantial compensation.
