Working in a warehouse can be a fulfilling job. You may have the opportunity to learn a wide variety of skills that can be used in various job settings, including learning to use a forklift, to run inventory systems and to manage the stocking and packaging of different types of products. But all of these different skills come with hazards and learning how to do these types of jobs could put you in harm’s way.
It’s important for all warehouse workers to know the types of hazards that await them with each new job responsibility and how to best avoid being injured while on the job. The most common types of injury-accidents that befall warehouse workers include, but are not limited to the following:
Injuries caused by a forklift. Forklifts can be responsible for a wide array of injuries that put workers off duty for weeks at a time. Workers can accidentally be run over by a forklift if workers are not warned to clear the area. Forklift operators should never try to move a load that is too heavy and cause a serious problem with their forklift. Dropping a load too quickly can also lead to serious and even life threatening injuries.
Slipping and falling. Among warehouse workers, slipping and falling is one of the greatest causes of injury-related missed work days because it can happen at any time. Workers may slip on debris, slippery floors or even the edges of a shipping truck or the loading dock. No matter where you slip or how far you fall you are likely to sustain injuries ranging from a broken or sprained wrist to more serious injuries to back, head or neck, and even death.
Back, neck and muscle injuries caused by lifting too heavy a load or not lifting a load properly. Lifting even a small box incorrectly can lead to injuries in your back, neck, arms or legs. Lifting a heavy or awkward box incorrectly can cause permanent damage, as well.
Remember, as a warehouse worker it’s important to pay attention to the rules of safety in your workplace. Whenever you learn a new task always ask for help if you can’t remember the instructions and never be afraid to ask someone else to take over or show you again in order to avoid injury.
