In an auditorium filled with singing children, attorney Mark Breyer stood to personally recognize one teacher that is going above and beyond for her students.
Shana Myers, a third-grade teacher at Four Peaks Elementary in Apache Junction, was surprised to receive February’s Teacher Appreciation Award from The Husband & Wife Law Team.
You could hear the excitement - with an audible wave of surprise from the assembled students - as Breyer announced the $250 prize.
"Your teachers don’t just spend time with you in the classroom," Breyer explained to the energized children. "My mom and both of my sisters are public school teachers, so I know how hard they work."
"Only one teacher makes us say, this is the teacher of the month," said Breyer. "And the teacher of the month, for the entire Phoenix metropolitan area, is Ms. Myers!"
Shana Myers: Teaching with Technology, and Teamwork
This month, the winning nomination highlighted the excellent use of technology in the classroom. In this amazing space, Shana Myers helps her students create digital presentations, Skype with other countries, and maintain a classroom blog.
The nomination distinguishes Myers’ personal patience and dedication to the job. "She is [the students’] personal cheerleader and will be right there with her students until they get the right answer," wrote the anonymous nomination. "She is always taking the extra time to explain why, instead of just saying things are right or wrong and that's it."
The nomination continues, "Ms. Myers is a third grade teacher who goes above and beyond for her students. She is usually the first one at school in the morning, and last to leave in the evening. We have even seen her there on Sundays."
"Our son hated going to school until this year. He is always excited to see what new science experiment they will be doing or what state/country they will Skype with each week."
