Deadly Motorcycle Collisions
Motorcyclists accidents in which riders are killed by drunk drivers have been in the news nationwide, including Arizona. ABC News reports on a drunk driver in Phoenix with a history of DUI who hit and killed a man travelling to work on his motorcycle in early 2016.
According to reports, a drunk driver in Pima County hit two different motorcycles in a single trip, putting one of them in the hospital. He attempted to pass a motorcycle, changed his mind after seeing an oncoming vehicle, and moved back into the lane, colliding with the motorcycle (the rider was able to pull over without crashing). The drunk driver continued at a high rate of speed, hitting and hospitalizing another motorcyclist. Police later found multiple bottles of alcohol in the passenger side of the car, including vodka, some of which had already been consumed.
Alcohol-Impaired Fatalities
As reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drunk driving caused 10,874 deaths in 2017, including motorcyclists, accounting for approximately one-third of the nation’s traffic fatalities. In Arizona, alcohol-impaired driving was involved in 28% of total statewide traffic deaths.
Alcohol and drug-impaired driving is a menace to all motorists on the roadways. Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable, as they lack the protection of an enclosed vehicle and will sustain far more serious injuries in a crash than passenger vehicle occupants.
Drunk driving is a serious crime, and carries severe criminal penalties. Injured victims of drunk drivers have the right to seek to recover compensation for the losses they have suffered if hit by an impaired driver.
